I Just Got My Smaart Operator Level 1 Certification – Here’s What It Means for Your Events

Big personal update from behind the console: I just passed my Smaart Operator Level 1 Certification from Rational Acoustics!
If you’ve worked with me before — whether at a club gig, corporate event, or one of the shows with The Badgemen or The Dirt Turtles — you know I’m always tweaking the system to make sure it sounds its best in the room. Smaart is the industry-standard software that lets me do that with real precision, and now I’m officially certified in operating it.

What is Smaart?
Smaart (pronounced “smart”) is a powerful audio analysis tool that measures how sound behaves in a real space. It shows me frequency response, phase, delay, and level differences across the venue so I can fine-tune the PA system for even coverage — no dead spots, no harsh areas, and clear sound everywhere the audience is standing or sitting.
It’s especially useful here in Las Vegas, where venues throw all kinds of challenges at us: reflective ballrooms, windy outdoor stages, heat affecting gear performance, or tight club spaces. With Smaart, I can quickly diagnose issues and make data-driven adjustments instead of just going by ear.
What the Certification Means
The Level 1 Smaart Operator Certification confirms that I’ve completed the official training and understand the fundamentals:
How to properly set up a measurement system
Taking accurate Spectrum and Transfer Function measurements
Reading and interpreting the data
Using it all to optimize sound systems
It’s not just a piece of paper — it means I can work faster and more accurately during setup and soundcheck, giving you and your audience the cleanest possible mix.
This builds directly on what I learned during my internship at AV Vegas working with advanced system design tools like JBL Performance Manager, and everything I’ve picked up mixing shows since my days running sound at Alfred University.
